Past Courses and Events
Dechema Training Course
Polymerisation Technology
24.- 28. September 2012 Hamburg
Coopol researchers recently attended the Dechema Training Course to get an overview of the kinetic and the thermodynamic of different polymerization reactions.
Topics covered included the kinetics of polymerization reactions (like condensation polymerization, polyaddition, emulsion polymerization, etc.) in large-scale reactors; thermal- and mass balance in semi-batch and continuous reactors; the behavior of the time of resistance of ideal and real reactors and the calculation of the turnover of real reactors. The highlight of the course was a lab-tour through the polymer department of the TU Hamburg. In small groups the participants got an impression of research in polymer chemistry at the university. Students benefitted from opportunities to discuss subjects of interest with fellow researchers and familiarize themselves with other polymer analysis techniques.
The training course gave the participants an insight into polymer chemistry with highlights of chemical engineering. More information can be found at the following sites:

COOPOL Dissemination event
Joint meeting with OPTICO project
12 September 2013 Hamburg
COOPOL researchers recently came together with researchers from a complimentary EU supported project OPTICO to discuss their results and gain insight across a range of topics
The day began with introductions of each project by the respective coordinators to detail partners involved and overall objectives. This session was followed by a series of master classes by distinguished speakers from both projects to provide a broader state of play summary in the key areas related to polymerisation process development
The afternoon session saw over 20 posters presented by young researchers and led to a lively discussion of results. The posters were also judged by an expert panel with the best poster award presented to Jennifer Puschke for her contribution entitled “Robust Model-based Control and Dynamic Real-time Optimization Methods”.
The dissemination event gave all participants valuable background information in the field of polymer chemistry process development constraints for scale up and introduction to a true production environment. In addition the latest scientific findings were presented and discussed to enable future research directions to be focussed for the highest potential impact
The full agenda for the meeting including poster contributors and key note speakers is available at the following link COOPOL OPTICO Joint Dissemination event programme
Focus on Women in Science
The achievements of women researchers in the COOPOL project were reflected in the recent award of best poster to Jennifer Pushke in the COOPOL/OPTICO dissemination event. Some of the experiences of female members of the team during the project are recorded in the article at the top of this page and will hopefully act as an example to encourage other women to participate in scientific endeavours and work to address the current gender imbalance.
